ANMS Mini Sabbatical Program
Description of the Program
The ANMS Basic Science Mini Sabbatical Program in Gastrointestinal Motility and Neurogastroenterology is designed to help investigators obtain new research skills that will promote their careers as independent investigators in the field of neurogastroenterology and motility.
Applicants will be supported to pursue a focused, intensive training experience in a specific research technique or experimental model at a university other than their home institution. Applicants are not restricted in their choice of a sponsoring investigator, nor the research technique used in the proposal.
Each participant will receive a stipend of up to $2,000 (for a 4-week experience) to help cover travel and lodging expenses.
Disorders of gastrointestinal motility and function, such as constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, functional dyspepsia, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and fecal incontinence, affect 40 percent of the population of the United States. These disorders pose a heavy burden of illness with decreased quality of life and decreased work productivity. Unfortunately, treatment options for these common conditions are limited by a lack of understanding of the underlying disease mechanisms. It is therefore essential that the field move forward with basic science research to continually fill these knowledge gaps. More focused research attention will allow for future breakthroughs in diagnostic testing and treatments in gastrointestinal motility and neurogastroenterological disorders.
The ANMS Basic Science Mini Sabbatical Program provides a unique opportunity for selected applicants to pursue apprenticeship- based training in leading-edge research methods. This program addresses unmet needs to advance gastrointestinal motility and neurogastroenterological research while supporting the career development of the next generation of researchers focused in this field.
Who Should Apply?
This program is designed for fellows, post- doctoral students, and early career faculty (less than 10 years from their terminal degree) who are interested in a research career in gastrointestinal motility and neurogastroenterology.
How to Apply
Applicants will be required to identify a research preceptor (sponsor), formulate a project, and specify a research method or model that complements the applicant’s skill set.
The Mini Sabbatical experience should be between 2 to 4 weeks in length. ANMS provides up to $4,000 for a full, 4-week Mini Sabbatical ($2,000 each for the applicant and the sponsor). These funds are used to defray travel and lodging expenses for the applicant, and compensate for the time and resources of the sponsor. The amount will be prorated depending on the duration of training (e.g., $1,000 for a 2-week experience, $1,500 for a 3-week experience, etc.).
Application requirements
Submit the following 4 items:
- Completed application form
- Letter of support from the applicant’s research mentor or department chair (home institution)
- Letter of intent from the research sponsor
- Curriculum vitae
On completion of the Mini Sabbatical
- Applicant and sponsor must complete an evaluation form.
- Applicant agrees to provide a 1-page summary of outcomes and benefits within 1 month of completing the sabbatical.
- The stipend will be paid when the evaluation and summary are received.
